Weight Loss And PCOS

(In my creepy voice…) This is the beginning of a long stretch of time. A time where sugar invades every aspect of our lives. It comes to kill and destroy! To eat…okay, just kidding, but seriously. How did Halloween candy get so popular? And how do weight loss and PCOS work together? It seems to scream our names at doctor’s offices, stores, and homes. Shelves are overflowing with candy and sugary treats. Even enticing you with some pretty stellar coupons. It’s everywhere!

PCOS & Halloween

This day alone can really put you to the test. Women with PCOS are already more susceptible to craving sweets. This is definitely exacerbated by extra helpings of sugar in our diet. Whether you’re stocking up for little trick-or-treaters, have some trick-or-treaters of your own, or are pretending that you really need all that candy to celebrate, I’m here to remind you of a simple truth. Halloween candy is NOT that special!

You Can Have Sweets Whenever You Want

As adults, we have the ability to indulge at any time. Healthfully and in moderation, of course. We can whip something up at home or buy an extra fancy bar of dark chocolate to satisfy that craving. There is nothing unique about Halloween candy. Sure it’s pretty in it’s perky, bright wrapping, but not different than any other time of the year.

You Don’t Have To Be Taken Out By M&Ms

You can stay on track with your healthy habits by making better choices when it comes to indulgences. There are many alternatives treats and habits. Here are a few ideas:

Trick-or-Treat Alternatives

  • Pumpkin Seeds are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and a punch of antioxidants. They also contain good quality protein and can be seasoned however your little heart desires! My favorite is cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ground cloves, cumin, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Toss with a drizzle of olive oil and roast in your oven for 30 min at 350 F.
  • Popcorn balls have a bad rap. There they are, all cute and healthIER, but nobody wants them. Try mixing up an especially sweet surprise for your family. Air pop your kernels to avoid bad fat and sweeten with raw honey or maple syrup. Try mixing in dark chocolate chips for an added punch of sweet!
  • Trail Mix is another fun adventure. Stock up on unsweetened dried fruit, your favorite nuts, and a few sweets to mix in. A handful is sure to stave off the Hershey’s.
  • Chocolate dipped fruit is good for all ages. Get some good quality dark chocolate, melt, and enjoy homemade fondue!
  • Good ole’ Dark Chocolate is my best friend this time of year. There are so many varieties to be had. Check out your local health food stores or even online. Always have some handy…ready for battle!

Create New Halloween Traditions For Kids & Family

  • Have a family cookout with friends. With the crisp fall air and beautiful scenery, this is a perfect time to strike a bonfire or fireplace and enjoy good company. Besides, there are lots of yummy pumpkin recipes to enjoy.
  • Throw a Halloween party for your kids that doesn’t involve ‘junky’ food. How about edible eye balls, which are hard boiled eggs with olives or guts which is spaghetti squash with tomato sauce. You can still make it something they look forward to with great games, activities, and costumes.
  • Eat a full and healthy meal before it’s time to trick-or-treat. Obvioulsly making it easier to say no to the sugar calling out to you.
  • Allow your kids to pick out 5-10 ‘must have’ pieces of candy and put all the rest in a candy pile. Have kids trade in the candy pile to the ‘Great Pumpkin’ (or other creative, personified creature) for a cool group gift. Perhaps a family iPad, tetherball set, the options are endless!

So, what are you going to do with the sugar cries all around you? How will you balance Halloween with the health concerns of all that sugar? Got other creative ideas? Share them, enjoy, and be safe!
